Japan is a destination where centuries-old traditions live comfortably alongside some of the most futuristic cities in the world. Let go explore.

For first-time visitors, a journey through Osaka, Kyoto, Mt. Fuji, Hakone and Tokyo captures many of the experiences that make Japan extraordinary. It combines incredible food, ancient culture, spectacular landscapes and energetic cities into one unforgettable adventure!

If you love immersive travel and incredible cuisine and lots to see and do, the vibrant city of Tokyo is waiting for you.

Osaka — Japan's Kitchen

Begin your journey in Osaka, a city famous for its welcoming personality, energetic nightlife and obsession with good food.

The heart of the action is Dotonbori, where enormous illuminated signs reflect across the canal and restaurants compete for your attention. This is the place to sample Osaka specialties such as takoyaki, crispy balls filled with octopus, and okonomiyaki, the city's famous savory pancake. Halal Dining: Osaka offers a growing variety of halal-certified and Muslim-friendly restaurants and they are noted on the menu's at the restaurant entrances.

But Osaka offers much more than food. Osaka Castle provides a glimpse into Japan's samurai history, while the towering Umeda Sky Building offers panoramic views across the modern city.

For something completely different, spend an evening exploring Shinsekai, an old-school entertainment district beneath the unmistakable Tsutenkaku Tower.

Don't miss: Dotonbori, Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, Shinsekai and Umeda.

Kyoto — Step back in time to Ancient Japan

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for more than a thousand years, and its temples, shrines, gardens and traditional neighborhoods remain among the country's greatest cultural treasures. Japan's national tourism organization describes Kyoto as a place where culture refined over roughly 1,200 years remains part of everyday life.

Start early at Fushimi Inari Taisha, walking beneath seemingly endless rows of brilliant vermilion torii gates climbing into the forest.

Then visit one of Kyoto's most beautiful landmarks, Kiyomizu-dera, before wandering through the atmospheric streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.

As evening approaches, explore Gion, Kyoto's famous traditional entertainment district. Wooden machiya houses, lantern-lit streets and centuries of geisha culture create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Another day can take you west to the towering bamboo of Arashiyama, while the magnificent golden Kinkaku-ji deserves a place on almost every first-time Kyoto itinerary.

Don't miss: Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Kinkak

Mt. Fuji — Meet Japan's Icon and an Ancient Japanese Pilgrimage destination for health and well being

Few images represent Japan as powerfully as Mt. Fuji.

At 3,776 meters, Japan's highest mountain dominates the landscape on clear days. But experiencing Fuji isn't necessarily about climbing it. Some of the mountain's most memorable views come from the lakes and villages surrounding it.

The Fuji Five Lakes area offers spectacular viewpoints, particularly around Lake Kawaguchiko. Traditional villages, lakeside walks and panoramic viewpoints make this an excellent place to slow the journey down after Osaka and Kyoto.

For one of Japan's classic photographs, visit Chureito Pagoda, where the five-story pagoda, Mt. Fuji and the surrounding landscape create an unmistakably Japanese scene.

Another worthwhile stop is Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village area famous for its crystal-clear spring ponds fed by water from Mt. Fuji.

Don't miss: Lake Kawaguchiko, Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and the panoramic Fuji viewpoints.

Hakone — Mountains, Hot Springs & the Black Egg

From the Fuji region, continue toward Hakone, one of Japan's classic mountain escapes.

Hakone is particularly famous for its onsen hot springs, Lake Ashi and views toward Mt. Fuji. It's also perfectly positioned between western Japan and Tokyo, making it a natural stop on this journey.

One of Hakone's essential experiences is the Hakone Ropeway.

The gondola carries visitors above the volcanic landscape toward Owakudani, with views across the valley and, when the weather cooperates, spectacular views of Mt. Fuji.

Owakudani itself was formed by volcanic activity roughly 3,000 years ago. Steam still rises from the mountainside, filling the area with the unmistakable smell of sulfur.

And this is where you need to try one of Hakone's quirkiest traditions:

Eat a Black Egg - Their delicious

Owakudani's famous kuro-tamago, or black eggs, are cooked using the area's geothermal waters. A chemical reaction involving the volcanic environment turns the shells completely black.

Legend says eating one will add seven years to your life.

We can't promise the extra seven years—but it's certainly one of those uniquely Japanese travel experiences worth trying.

Finish the day around Lake Ashi, where on a clear day Mt. Fuji rises beyond the surrounding mountains. Hakone is also an ideal place to spend a night in a traditional ryokan, enjoy a Japanese dinner and experience an onsen.

Don't miss: Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, black eggs, Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine and an onsen experience.

Tokyo — Where Japan Meets the Future

After Kyoto's temples and Hakone's mountain landscapes, arriving in one of the world's great megacities is an experience in itself.

Start at Asakusa, where the enormous Kaminarimon Gate welcomes visitors toward Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple. Walk along Nakamise shopping street for traditional snacks and souvenirs before seeing an entirely different side of the city.

In Shibuya, join the crowds crossing the famous Shibuya Scramble and head upward for spectacular views across Tokyo.

Nearby Harajuku mixes youth culture, fashion and colorful street food with the peaceful forest surrounding Meiji Shrine.
